Congenital Syphilis

This is a condition where syphilis is passed from a mother to foetus in utero, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.

Syphilis may result in miscarriagepremature birthstillbirth or the death of newborn babies.

It can cause many physical abnormalities, as seen in the above photo (1), along with deformities of the teeth - mulberry molars (2) and Hutchinson’s incisors (3), corneal inflammation, enlarged spleen and liver, hard palate defect and various skeletal abnormalities.

In addition to these, deafness, jaundice, pneumonia, rash, fever and anaemia may be present.
